Visited Colchester for a few days coming from Londen to see a good friend who lives and studies there. She showed me around town, we went to the Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum, both of which are free and worth wandering around in for a bit. The city centre has many narrow little streets with cute shops, but isn't very large. The university and campus have got to be one of the ugliest and depressing bunch of buildings I've ever seen, they don't do Colchester justice. But taking a ride in one of the few functioning remaining Paternoster lifts in the uni library was a very cool experience. The highlight of the city, for me, was the large Castle park, in gorgeous fall colours when we visited, and with its abundance of squirrels a very photogenic park as well. It's a nice city but nothing special, wouldn't mind going back but its no place for a citytrip or daytrip from London or anything of the sort. You can't notice it's the oldest town in Britain.
