Many people will only know Bergamo for its airport, servicing cheap Ryanair flights. But please, when you're even slightly in the neighbourhood, don't forget to pay the city itself a visit. Very easily accessible (and affordable) by the train from Milan, it provides a welcome change of pace from the busy streets of Milan. The funiculaire to the picturesque Old Town or Citta Alta (located after about a mile just behind the corner of the straight road northwards from the train station) is an attraction in and of itself, easily surpassing the funiculaire of Montmartre. From the Citta Alta one enjoys a spectacular view over the city, as can be seen from my pictures. Too bad I went to Bergamo on my last day in Italy and had to rush back to Milan to catch my flight, otherwise I would have loved to stay longer and I definitely plan on returning.
